Saving and publishing

The most important difference in the whole program, explained in one sentence

11.1 The difference in one sentence

Save keeps your change inside miraCMS. Publish puts it on your website.

As long as you have only saved, no visitor sees any of it. You can work in peace, carry on tomorrow, and publish once everything is right.

11.2 Saving

As soon as you change a text, “Save” appears on the right of the bar above the preview, with the number of unsaved changes. Press it, or ⌘S on a Mac (Ctrl+S on Windows).

On the left of the bar you then see “Saving…”, then “Building preview …”, and finally “Saved”. The preview now shows your version, the website still shows the old one.

Changed your mind before saving? “Reset” in the edit panel brings back the saved text of that field.

Do not close the window with unsaved changes

miraCMS asks before you leave with unsaved text, and so does your browser when you close the tab. Take that question seriously: text you typed but did not save is gone afterwards.

11.3 Publishing

This needs the right to publish. Without it, the button is missing and miraTEQ publishes for you (11.4).

1. Press “Publish” at the top. The number next to it counts the changes since the last publication
2. The window “Publish to live” names your website and says how much will go out, for example “12 changes will be published. Affects 3 pages.” “Technical details” lists the files concerned, you can ignore it
3. Press “Publish now”

After that it says “Published. The changes are now on the website.” If the window says “Nothing to publish”, your website already shows the latest version.

Publishing covers the whole website

The complete state always goes out, with all pages and all languages together. You cannot publish a single page or a single language. Check briefly whether a half-finished text is still waiting somewhere.

If publishing does not work, the window shows “Not published” and the reason. Nothing went live then, the old version stays online. Two cases you can solve yourself:

“Something was saved while publishing was running. That part is not out yet. Please publish once more.”	Press “Publish” once more

For every other message, write to us and copy the text of the message.

11.4 Without the right to publish

Save as usual. Tell us when you are done, we take a look and publish. That way, a second pair of eyes sees every change before your guests do.
